33 Bottles of Beer: Super Sour Special Edition

Powerful Enough for a Fan, pH-Balanced for a pHanatic

My original beer journal was born from attending a few too many beer festivals, and was designed to encompass a wide variety of beer styles, from hoppy IPAs to smoky stouts, and yes ... sour beers. But if you've ever used a multi-tool as a screwdriver, you know that sometimes a dedicated tool does the job just a little bit better.

Specialized for Sour

This beer journal is designed for sour beers. Gueze. Lambic. Open Fermented. Barrel-Aged. Funky Brett-infused beers. Oud Bruin and Berlinerweisse

It’s tough to hold a notepad in one hand, a pencil in the other, and have another hand left for beer. As with my classic journal, taking notes with 33 Beers: Super Sour Special Edition is as simple as checking a few boxes and entering a few basic facts, including souring method, aging, and of course, pH.

Use the Pocket pH Kit to Assess your Beer's Acidity

How Sour is Sour?

Unlike common beer stats like ABV and IBUs, most brewers don't publicize their beers' acidity. As a companion to this book, I'm debuting an analog acid test that you can use to test beers in the wild, and note their pH, aka "potential of hydrogen." It's a way to put a number to a liquid's acidity, or lack thereof. Water measures 7.0, and anything below that is considered acidic. Most beers are in the 4.5-5 range, but some sour beers can get down into the 3's or even 2's.

Sour Beer Flavor Wheel

The Flavor Wheel, Funkified

The flavor wheel in 33 Beers: Super Sour Special Edition can be used to quickly recall a beer’s unique flavor long after consumption. For low values of the flavor, fill in dots near the wheel’s center. I've updated this wheel to include some of the flavors you might encounter in the sour beers you sample. A Belgian Oude Gueze is used in the example shown.

Super-Shiny Secret Ingredient

Beer has often been described as liquid sunshine, but sour beers taste ... sparkly. The cover of this book features two metallic inks and at least two different shiny metallic foil stamps. It's a sparkle party ... for your mouth! A teeny, tiny amount of real sour beer is infused into the ink, which is cryptically noted on the back.

33 Beers is made with 100% recycled papers sourced from North America. Interior pages are 100% post-consumer recycled content, and covers are made with 100% reclaimed paper (made from a blend of post-consumer and post-industrial waste). The books are printed with care and infused with a little bit of beer in sunny Portland, Oregon.
