Designed for Speed

My amaro journal is designed for ease of use. It’s tough to hold a notepad in one hand, a pencil in the other, and have another hand left for one amaro, let alone amari (plural of amaro in Italian). Taking notes with 33 Glasses of Amaro is as simple as checking a few boxes and entering a few basic facts – its name, primary flavor (artichoke, mint, rhubarb, etc.), distiller, and origin.

The Wheel Deal

The flavor wheel in 33 Glasses of Amaro can be used to quickly recall an amaro's unique flavor long after your glass is empty. For low values of a particular flavor, fill in dots near the wheel’s center. A classic mint-forward fernet from Milan is used in the example shown.

A Case for Complexity

Unlike wine, whose sole ingredient is fruit (most often grapes), Amari are made from a hugely diverse universe of herbs, spices, fruits and even vegetables. This creates a wildly complex and interesting drink, but presents a small problem for the designer. My solution was four-fold: 

  • few extra spokes on the flavor wheel (20 adjectives vs. the 16 used in most of my other books)
  • A unique bitter vs. sweet plot that helps you locate your amaro on an x-y graph familiar from geometry class
  • A color meter to indicate the amaro's visual appeal, and
  • Plenty of space for notes to encompass everything else!
